Break Out Session 2
The second break out session of the day was with John Claytor, who has been a staff member with OCLS since 1970. The session he led was Hide and Seek Exposing the OCLS Secret Places. This included pictures from the roof, hidden staircases, the cooler rooms, the computer and phone networking equipment and a other areas. He also showed some of the early children's programming books and old Better Homes and Garden from 1949 which had a picture of John sitting in his father's lap (of which we own the microfiche).

Break Out Session
My first Break Out Session at staff day was through Let's Eat where customers can go to assemble gourmet family meals that then you can take home and freeze or cook at your leisure. They do parties, have special meal assemblies for children, and have wine and beer tastings as well. It was a very interesting session and very reasonable from a price stand point. They had samples of pasta e fagioli soup.

Key Note Speaker: Joan Frye Williams
Here is the link for our Keynote speaker, Joan Frye Williams, a library futurist. From her talk today: 1. Move from the exception to mainstream
2. Move from worthy cause to return on investment
3. Move from a focus on the past to a focus on the future.
Libraries are not in the business of information, but the business of transformation.
Relationships trump transactions.
Be passionate. Share what book, or film, or music influenced your life and changed your view of the world.

Staff Day at OCLS
So....a week from tomorrow is the annual staff day at the Orange County Library System. In celebration of 2.1 and staff day, I am going to blog/post/upload pics of the festivities where possible. Staff day was the brainchild of our director, Mary Anne Hodel, to get staff all together on one day and offer professional development, speakers, awards, and general library merriment in celebration of its employees, its accomplishments, and look forward to anotheryear of growth and opportunity.
We'll see how it goes as I lug my laptop and digital camera around and how tech savvy or not I wind up being. I thought it would be an interesting way for others who may run across my blog to experience an enriching day in each year at the library.
More to follow....so check it out....
